Red Meat: Why It Is Not as Bad as You Think

In recent years, if you are a big red meat eater, you have probably heard about some of the risks typically associated with eating red meat. Although when eating red meat in abundance on a daily basic there can be some negative side effects, it can in fact be a good thing to include some red meat in your diet, and today we are here to explain why!

Leaner cuts of unprocessed red meat, such as sirloin steaks or pork tenderloin, may be healthier than other types because they are unprocessed and do not contain excess salt, fat, or preservatives, and processed red meats such as bacon, hot dogs, sausage, bologna, salami, and similar meat are not quite as healthy and should probably be avoided.

According to research, one 3.5-ounce (oz) or 100-gram (g) serving of quality uncooked ground beef contains:

  • 247 calories
  • 19.07 g of fat
  • 17.44 g of protein
  • 1.97 milligrams (mg) of iron
  • 274 mg of potassium
  • 4.23 mg of zinc
  • 2.15 micrograms of vitamin B-12

With red meat holding so many nutrients, those choosing not to eat any red meat must now take supplemental B-12 in order to prevent B-12 deficiency anaemia. It is incredibly important for infants, young children, people with heavy periods and pregnancy women to ensure they are getting enough iron to avoid getting poorly and facing serious health complications.

It is actually recommended for people to consume red meat around three times per week, equivalent to about 12–18 oz per week and to avoid all types of processed meat.
