The Best Breastfeeding Positions for Mom and Baby

In the first few weeks after birth, it’s not easy to know what position will be most comfortable for you and your baby. There are so many opinions about which breastfeeding positions work best that it can get confusing! Helping new moms find the right position is exactly why we created this blog post. Read on to learn more!

1. The Cradle Hold

This hold is most popular among new mothers. It provides your baby with great control over his head and neck, which will help him position himself to feed more easily. Your baby can easily move his arms and hands towards or away from his face for comfort purposes.

How to do it:

You should be sitting upright with your baby breastfeeding. The baby’s ear, shoulder, and hip should be lined up in this order.

The baby should be at breast level, not below or above it.

With the hand closest to the breast, you are going to clamp down firmly over the back of the head. Ensure there is enough room for your nipple between his nose and the palm of his hand.

2. The Cross-Cradle Hold

This hold is especially great for babies with hip dysplasia as it provides them with additional support. However, mothers who have flat or inverted nipples will also find this hold helpful as it ensures that your baby doesn’t miss out on any milk during feedings.

It is important for mothers to remember that if their infant prefers not to be in the cross-cradle hold, she needs to switch back to the cradle position.

How To Do It:

You should be sitting with your baby breastfeeding. His body should be parallel over yours, and his ear, shoulder, and hip should be lined up in this order.

With the hand closest to the breast, you are going to wrap your fingers around the back of his head and cradle it with your palm. The pads of your thumb and forefinger should be right behind his ears.

3. Football Hold

The football hold is a great position as it enables babies to feed easily with good control over their heads and neck.

How to do it:

You should squat or sit on an armless chair. Use pillows behind your back for support if necessary. Your baby’s body should be parallel to yours, with his legs straddling your waist.

Hold him around his chest with the hand closest to the breast. Your fingers should be spread out, and you should grip him firmly under his armpits.

Your baby’s body should be positioned at breast level, with the ear, shoulder, and hip lined up. He can use his hand to support himself for more comfort.

4. The Side-Lying Position

The side-lying position is especially helpful if you are suffering from back pain or exhaustion.

How to do it:

You should be lying on your side with the edge of the bed placed behind your arm for support. Your baby should face towards your chest, with his ear, shoulder, and hip lined up in this order.

Your baby’s hips should be lower than his body, with one leg bent and the other straight. Bend your top upper leg towards him. His head should be resting on your arm while your forearm is placed under his neck for support.

He can use both hands to hold onto you. To ensure that he has enough room to breathe, place some pillows between his legs.

5. The Lying Down Hold

This is one of the best breastfeeding positions for mothers who have flat or inverted nipples. It ensures that your baby doesn’t lose out on any milk during feedings, as well as provides support to his head and neck.

How to do it:

You should be lying on your back with your baby breastfeeding. Your baby’s body should be parallel to yours, and his ear, shoulder, and hip should be lined up in this order.

Place a pillow under both of your heads to elevate your chests.

In conclusion, there are many breastfeeding positions for you and your baby. The best one is the one that feels most comfortable for you both. So, try them out today!
